Fly: What is your first memory of buying or selling something?
Lindsay Redhead: Basically, my parents had a reward system—do chores or make certain grades, and I would earn credit. I distinctly remember that, for some reason, I really wanted this fleece blanket with the Mad Hatter’s face on it from Alice in Wonderland, the one with Johnny Depp, which is kind of alarming when you look at it, but I thought it was super cool. My parents were like, “Okay, if you want to use your reward money for this, you absolutely can.” It taught me accountability and responsibility, and that you can reward yourself in certain ways. I didn’t exactly like school, so I think they were trying to figure out how to incentivize me.
Fly: So, follow-up question—do you still have it? Is it displayed prominently or tucked away?
Lindsay Redhead: It’s in our living room and regularly used. Depending on who comes over, it might get thrown to the bottom of the blanket pile, but most of the time, it’s out and about getting used.
