Apprentice Questions: Know Your Block with Peter Laville

Today’s Apprentice Question is for Peter Laville, Land Specialist in Baton Rouge, LA.

What’s the story with this property? What’s happening there?

Mariana: One question I have is, how do you stay up to date on the current events and things going on within your block?

Peter Laville: First thing, checking local news—they’re always posting little articles and things like that. Second, LinkedIn and social media posts—a lot of these guys will post their articles before they officially come out, so that’s an easy way to find them. Third, just talking to the owners of my block—calling them with genuine curiosity. Not everything is about a sale; sometimes it’s just asking, “Hey, what’s the story with this property? What’s happening there?” And these guys will tell you, “Oh, the county approached me, we’re putting in a road here in the next year or two,” or “Yeah, there’s a proposed bridge here.” So, things before the news even breaks, we’ll hear about by directly calling the owners and staying up to date with what’s going on in our block.
